Adar II 20 – They saw Jesus walking on the sea…

This is the name “Yeshua” (יֵשׁוּעַ – Jesus) as seen on the James Ossuary. Yeshua comes from the verb “yasha” meaning “to save or deliver.” Yeshua means “Salvation.”

Yesterday we read how Jesus fed the 5,000. We aren’t given a specific date for that event, but the book of John tells us that “the Passover was near.” Today we pick up the text again and remember a time when Jesus walked upon the water. These events likely occurred one year before His crucifixion. We finished yesterday’s story with the words, “Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.” Today, we’ll pick up with those same words and see what John says happened next.

Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.

Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.

But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”

Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going. – John 6:15-21 (NKJ)
