Nisan 16 – Joseph & Jesus

Nisan 16, 5784; from sunset April 23, 2024, to sunset April 24, 2024

Over the past week we’ve made some comparisons between Joseph and Jesus.  Today in the Bible, we’ll review them and add more to the mix.

Like Jesus, Joseph was the long-awaited, much loved son…

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. – Genesis 37:3a (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph was sent to his brothers by his father…

And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem?  Come, I will send you to them.”

So he said to him, “Here I am.”

Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.”  So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem. – Genesis 37:13-14 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph’s brothers plotted to kill him…

Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him. – Genesis 37:18 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph was stripped of his clothing…

So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. – Genesis 37:23 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph was thrown into a hole in the earth…

Then they took him and cast him into a pit.  And the pit was empty; there was no water in it. – Genesis 37:24 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph’s brothers sat down to eat after disposing of him…

And they sat down to eat a meal. – Genesis 37:25 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, there was a presence of balms, spices, and myrrh…

Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt. – Genesis 37:25 (NKJ)

Like Jesus at His resurrection, Joseph, too, was lifted up out of the earth; and he had been betrayed for pieces of silver…

Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. – Genesis 37:28 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph was discovered missing, upsetting those who came to check on him…

Then Reuben returned to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.  And he returned to his brothers and said, “The lad is no more; and I, where shall I go?” – Genesis 37:29-30 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, a story was made up about what happened to his body…

So they took Joseph’s tunic, killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood.  Then they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son’s tunic or not?”

And he recognized it and said, “It is my son’s tunic.  A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt Joseph is torn to pieces.” – Genesis 37:31-33 (NKJ)

Like Jesus and the veil torn in the Temple, Joseph’s father tore his clothing when he heard of the death of his son…

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days. – Genesis 37:34 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph was promoted to a high position…

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” – Genesis 41:41 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, what others intended for evil, God turned into good–for the preservation of many lives…

“But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.” – Genesis 45:5 (NKJ)

These are just a few of the comparisons that can be made between Jesus and Joseph.  We encourage you to read through the story of Joseph for yourself and see what else you can find.
