Tammuz 10 – Make a laver of bronze

Tammuz 10, 5784; from sunset July 15, 2024, to sunset July 16, 2024

This is the name “Mosheh” (מֺשֶׁה – Moses) as seen in the Dead Sea Scrolls, written over two thousand years ago.

Today in the Bible, we’re listening in to the conversation between the LORD and Moses, during the days that Moses was upon the mountain, after the LORD gave Israel the Ten Commandments.  Today we’re focusing on the laver for cleansing.  The laver doesn’t get much press, in fact it would be easy to overlook, but for the fact that it was the only thing that was able to keep the priests alive while they were serving the LORD in the Tabernacle.

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “You shall also make a laver of bronze, with its base also of bronze, for washing. You shall put it between the tabernacle of meeting and the altar. And you shall put water in it, for Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet in water from it. When they go into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire to the LORD, they shall wash with water, lest they die. So they shall wash their hands and their feet, lest they die. And it shall be a statute forever to them– to him and his descendants throughout their generations.” – Exodus 30:17-21

Reading these verses brings to mind one of Jesus’ last acts with His Apostles before His crucifixion, the washing of their feet. One can’t help but compare these two stories and look for any similarities they may bear.
