February/March

Adar (אֲדׇר) – 12th month; 29 days

Leap Years: Adar I (אֲדׇר א) – 30 days / Adar II (אֲדׇר ב) 29 days

Adar (אֲדׇר) is the twelfth month of the biblical calendar.  The meaning of the name Adar is uncertain, but some suggest “glorious.”

As the last month of the year, on a leap year, Adar is doubled, and it becomes known as Adar I and Adar II or Adar א and Adar ב.

Some of the events occurring during this month are:

  • Heldai was captain of the guard.
  • Ezekiel receives a word against Pharaoh.
  • The birth and death of Moses.
  • The story of Purim.
  • Jeconiah is released from prison.
  • Teachings of Jesus before His crucifixion.

Many congregations take the opportunity to bless the upcoming new month on the Sabbath before.  The blessing takes on different forms depending upon the congregation, below is a sample blessing.

Birkat Hachodesh

May it be Your will, LORD, our God and God of our fathers,

that You begin for us this month of Adar

for goodness and for blessing.

May You give to us long life,

a life of peace,

a life of goodness,

a life of blessing,

a life of sustenance,

a life of physical health,

a life in which there is fear of heaven and fear of sin,

a life in which there is no shame or humiliation;

a life of wealth and honor,

a life in which we love Torah and fear God;

a life in which the LORD fulfills the requests of our hearts for good.

Amen.  Selah.
