1st Month – Nisan

March/April

Nisan (נִיסׇן) – 1st month; 30 days

Nisan (נִיסׇן) is the first month of the biblical calendar.  Nisan means “their flight;” other sources render the meaning as “firstfruits” and trace its origin to the Sumerian language. Either meaning can be applied to events that occurred in the Bible during this month. It is the month that God delivered Israel from Egypt and it is the month that the Firstfruits offering is made. Another name for this month is “Abib” which is a word used to describe newly ripened barley, which is still soft. Abib is the grain used for the Firstfruits offering.

As we learned yesterday, just a couple of weeks before God would bring Israel out of Egypt, He took Moses a side and gave him this commandment.

Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.” – Exodus 12:1-2 (NKJ)

Previously, the month of Tishrei was considered to be the first month of the year. The name Tishrei even means “beginning.” With this commandment, Tishrei now became the seventh month.

Nisan is a very busy month in the Bible. It contains several Appointed Times and many stories revolve around it. Some of the events occurring during this month are:

We hope you’ll join us for this very busy month and learn what all happened this month in the Bible.

Many congregations take the opportunity to bless the upcoming new month on the Sabbath before.  The blessing takes on different forms depending upon the congregation, below is a sample blessing.

Birkat Hachodesh

May it be Your will, LORD, our God and God of our fathers,

that You begin for us this month of Nisan

for goodness and for blessing.

May You give to us long life,

a life of peace,

a life of goodness,

a life of blessing,

a life of sustenance,

a life of physical health,

a life in which there is fear of heaven and fear of sin,

a life in which there is no shame or humiliation;

a life of wealth and honor,

a life in which we love Torah and fear God;

a life in which the LORD fulfills the requests of our hearts for good.

Amen.  Selah.
