Nisan 3 – I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks…

Nisan 3, 5785; from sunset March 31, 2025, to sunset April 1, 2025

(The third day of the first month)

This is a pencil drawing of what is recognized as the tomb of Daniel. It is located in Susa, Iran. No one can say for certain that he is buried here, however, it is a popular tourist destination to this day.

In Daniel chapter 10 we read the prelude to his famous vision of the latter days.

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks.  I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks. – Daniel 10:2-3

The story goes on to say that he received that vision on the 24th day of the first month.  That makes today the day that Daniel set his heart to understand and humble himself before God.

“… from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words.  But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. – Daniel 10:12-13

Beginning today and lasting for the next three weeks, Daniel was in a state of mourning.  He was in mourning on the day the Passover lambs would have been selected, had there been a temple in Jerusalem.  He was in mourning on the day that Passover lamb would have been sacrificed.  He was in mourning during the Passover Seder.  He was in mourning during the entire seven days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.  Also, during these days, there was a great spiritual battle occurring.  Perhaps this battle is a reflection of what Jesus was facing during the days and weeks leading up to His crucifixion? It’s hard for us to imagine what happens in the heavenlies.  We tend to focus on what we can see here on earth; but let’s try to remember Daniel’s story and realize that God is always working behind the scenes.
