Nisan 14 – Joseph & Jesus

Nisan 14, 5785; from sunset April 11, 2025, to sunset April 12, 2025

(The fourteenth day of the first month)

Just a couple of days ago, we compared how Joseph’s brothers plotted to kill him to how the chief priests and the elders plotted to kill Jesus.  And, like Jesus, Joseph was sent to his brothers by his father.  But there are more similarities between Joseph and Jesus.  With Jesus freshly placed into the grave, let’s continue our comparison by focusing on the events of today.

Like Jesus, Joseph was stripped of his clothing…

So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him. – Genesis 37:23 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph was thrown into a hole in the earth…

Then they took him and cast him into a pit.  And the pit was empty; there was no water in it. – Genesis 37:24 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph’s brothers sat down to eat a meal after placing his body in the earth…

And they sat down to eat a meal. – Genesis 37:25 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, there was a presence of balms, spices, and myrrh…

Then they lifted their eyes and looked, and there was a company of Ishmaelites, coming from Gilead with their camels, bearing spices, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry them down to Egypt. – Genesis 37:25 (NKJ)

Like Jesus, Joseph was betrayed for pieces of silver…

Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. – Genesis 37:28 (NKJ)

Like Jesus and the veil torn in the Temple, Joseph’s father tore his clothing when he heard of the death of his son…

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days. – Genesis 37:34 (NKJ)

Like Jesus’ story, the story of Joseph is not over yet.  Join us again tomorrow as we make even more comparisons between these two men.
