Iyyar 28 – Then Samuel died…

Iyyar 28, 5785; from sunset May 25, 2025, to sunset May 26, 2025

(The twenty-eighth day of the second month)

This is the name “Shemu’el” (שְׁמוּאֵל – Samuel) as seen in the Aleppo Codex, written over one thousand years ago.

According to Jewish tradition, today is the day that Samuel the prophet died.  The Bible doesn’t give us much detail surrounding his death.

Then Samuel died; and the Israelites gathered together and lamented for him, and buried him at his home in Ramah. – 1 Samuel 25:1 (NKJ)

Samuel’s Tomb is located on a steep hill 7-8 miles northwest of Jerusalem.  It is a national park in Israel today – and actually not in Ramah (which means “high”).  You can see Ramah from the tomb compound; it is also on a hill.  Legend has it that Samuel’s bones were reburied here many centuries ago.  The site has been a synagogue, a church, and a mosque.
