Tammuz 22 – The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build

Tammuz 22, 5785; from sunset July 17, 2025, to sunset July 18, 2025

(The twenty-second day of the fourth month)

This is an image of a portion of the wall rebuilt by Nehemiah and company.

Last week we considered the possibility that Nehemiah’s secret night ride to inspect the city gates may have been during the Full Moon.  At a later date he met with the officials and shared with them what God had put upon his heart to do for Jerusalem…rebuild the city walls and gates.  The Bible does not give us a specific date for the gathering, today in the Bible, we’ve chosen to remember their meeting.

And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned.  Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.”

And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me.  And they said, “Let us rise up and build.”  So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing?  Are you rebelling against the king?”

Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.” – Nehemiah 2:16-20 (ESV)

It seems that even the Bible gives us a week off in the summer. We have found nothing to post for the upcoming week, but we promise we’ll be back! In just a few days Ezra, and those who have made the journey from Babylon to Jerusalem with him, will arrive at their destination. Nehemiah, and the men and women working alongside him, will begin restoring the walls and gates of the city. And, in between all of that, the spies sent out by Moses will return and give their report. We’ll remember the destruction of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem by both Nebuchadnezzar and the Romans. And, finally, Ezekiel received a word from the LORD at a key point in the history of the Temple and the Jewish people.

Have an enjoyable week and we hope that you’ll join us as we continue to study what happened “Today in the Bible.”
