(The seventh day of the fifth month)

Nebuchadnezzar II was the longest-reigning king of the Babylonian dynasty. Much of his fame comes from his appearance in the Hebrew Bible. He is known for the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. By the time of his death, he was among the most powerful rulers in the world.
Nebuchadnezzar laid siege against Jerusalem beginning in the 9th year of Zedekiah’s reign, in the 10th month (Tevet). The siege lasted for 2 1/2 years! Last month we learned that on the ninth day of the fourth month (Tammuz) his army broke through the walls of Jerusalem. King Zedekiah and many of his armed men fled the city but were captured the next day on the plains of Jericho.
Now, after nearly a month of fierce fighting inside the city, the armies of Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, broke through into the Temple compound. Tradition holds that they feasted and vandalized until the afternoon of Av 9, when they set the Holy Temple aflame.
And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month (which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. – 2 Kings 25:8-22 (NKJ)
