Elul 21 – When You Gather the Grapes of Your Vineyard

Elul 21, 5785; from sunset September 13, 2025, to sunset September 14, 2025

(The twenty-first day of the sixth month)

This is the name “Mosheh” (מֺשֶׁה – Moses) as seen in the Dead Sea Scrolls, written over two thousand years ago.

Today in the Bible, we’re remembering a word from the LORD about sharing with those in need and those who don’t fit in. In these days before the autumn Appointed Times, it is customary to commit acts of charitable giving and repair relationships that have been injured.

It was about four months ago, that we remembered the blossoming of the grapes in the Song of Solomon.

Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine has budded, whether the grape blossoms are open… – Song of Solomon 7:12a (NKJ)

The growing season in Israel varies based upon localized climates.  Crops grown in the chillier hill country take longer to mature than those in the warmer lowlands.  It usually takes between 110-120 days for grapes to mature from flower to fruit.  Depending on the locale, the grape harvest can begin as early as mid-June and is usually completed before the Feast of Tabernacles.

Since we are in a season of repentance and charitable giving, we’re randomly placing on the biblical calendar this reminder from the LORD about sharing the provisions He has given to us with those who have run upon hard times.

“But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing.

“When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow.  And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this thing.” – Deuteronomy 24:18, 21-22 (NKJ)

Let’s all strive to remember that, but for the grace of God, there go I.
