Cheshvan 2 – When You Beat Your Olive Trees…

Cheshvan 2, 5786; from sunset October 23, 2025, to sunset October 24, 2025

(The second day of the eighth month)

This is the name “Mosheh” (מֺשֶׁה – Moses) as seen in the Dead Sea Scrolls, written over two thousand years ago.

The olive harvest may begin shortly before the Feast of Tabernacles, but the bulk of the olive crop is gathered after the festival concludes.  Today, we’re placing on the calendar this reminder from the LORD about sharing with those who have run upon hard times and with those who don’t fit in.  This commandment was put in place to remind us that we, too, once experienced hard times and by the grace of God we have prospered.  Can we really enjoy the bounty that God has given us while knowing that there are others who are still struggling?  Perhaps it’s time to reevaluate our charitable giving and see if we can do more for those who have less.

You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.  But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing…

…when you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow…

…and you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this thing. – Deuteronomy 24:17-22
