9th Month – Kislev

November/December

Kislev (כִּסְלֵו) – 9th month; 29 or 30 days

Kislev (כִּסְלֵו) is the ninth month of the biblical calendar.  You may also see this spelled like “Chislev.” The name of the month is derived from the Akkadian word kislimu. Its meaning is unclear. Some try to connect it with the Hebrew word “kesel” (כֶּסֶל) meaning “hope” or “confidence.” It also may be associated with the word “kesil” (כְּסִיל) which is translated as either “constellations” or “Orion.” The constellation of Orion (“kesil”) is visible during the month of Kislev.

Last month we promised to begin including places in the Bible where the New Moon is mentioned. This month we’ll take a look at the 66th chapter of Isaiah where we learn that one day, all of mankind will worship the LORD on each New Moon and on each Sabbath.

And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the LORD. – Isaiah 66:23 (NKJ)

Many congregations take the opportunity to bless the upcoming new month on the Sabbath before.  The blessing takes on different forms depending upon the congregation, below is a sample blessing.

Birkat Hachodesh

May it be Your will, LORD, our God and God of our fathers,

that You begin for us this month of Kislev

for goodness and for blessing.

May You give to us long life,

a life of peace,

a life of goodness,

a life of blessing,

a life of sustenance,

a life of physical health,

a life in which there is fear of heaven and fear of sin,

a life in which there is no shame or humiliation;

a life of wealth and honor,

a life in which we love Torah and fear God;

a life in which the LORD fulfills the requests of our hearts for good.

Amen.  Selah.
