Tishrei 18 – Sukkot, Day 4 – The Offerings

Today in the Bible, we want to remember the animals that were sacrificed to the LORD. Though it may be hard for us to understand in our day, they were an integral part of God’s self-prescribed worship system. Their lives were dedicated to the LORD.

In the 29th chapter of Numbers, God reveals a listing of sacrifices for observing His Holy Days. The sacrifices for the Feast of Sukkot are, by far, the most extensive. In this series, each day we’ll focus on a different facet of the sacrifices. Today, we’ll take a look at the “two rams.”

The two rams symbolize consecration with a special connection to the priesthood.

And he brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Then Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, and Moses killed it. Also he took some of its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. – Leviticus 8:22-23 (NKJ)

There is also a theme of rams used for substitution – particularly in the story of Abraham and Isaac.

And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.”

And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of The LORD it shall be provided.” – Genesis 22:10-14 (NKJ)

A foreshadowing of our Messiah, Jesus, who wore a thicket of interwoven thorns around His head — and served as a substitution for us..

On the fourth day present ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs in their first year, without blemish, and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number, according to the ordinance; also one kid of the goats as a sin offering, besides the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering. – Numbers 29:23-25 (NKJ)
