Tishrei 19 – Sukkot, Day 5 – The Offerings

Today in the Bible, we want to remember the animals that were sacrificed to the LORD. Though it may be hard for us to understand in our day, they were an integral part of God’s self-prescribed worship system. Their lives were dedicated to the LORD.

In the 29th chapter of Numbers, God reveals a listing of sacrifices for observing His Holy Days. The sacrifices for the Feast of Sukkot are, by far, the most extensive. In this series, each day we’ll focus on a different facet of the sacrifices. Today, we’ll take a look at the “14 lambs.”

The lambs sacrificed on the altar of God had to be unblemished — symbolizing pureness, perfection, and innocence. The number seven represents complete wholeness, perfection. Doubling this number to fourteen adds an emphasis to that completion. Last spring when we celebrated the Feast of Weeks (aka Pentecost), we counted seven weeks of seven days — the next day we remembered the covenant of Mount Sinai and the gift of the Holy Spirit — both which are described as being spoken in all of the languages of the world at once — for all Nations. The number of lambs at the Feast of Tabernacles doubles this completeness and perfection — God’s tabernacling with His people once again, just as He did in the beginning.

Below are the requirements for the fifth day of Sukkot.

On the fifth day present nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish, and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, by their number, according to the ordinance; also one goat as a sin offering, besides the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering. – Numbers 29:26-28 (NKJ)
